How we tested

A clean WordPress 6.8 install on a 2 vCPU / 4 GB London host, PHP 8.3, 20 posts and one page builder template. We record a baseline, activate W3 Total Cache with its default settings, and re-run three cold-cache tests. The published figure is the median.

W3 Total Cache rewards administrators who already know which layer is slow. Out of the box it scored 78 on our reference site; after a Redis object cache and minification pass, the same install reached 88.

That gap is the whole story. If nobody on the team will tune it, a simpler plugin will produce a better result.

No, but object caching is where most of its remaining advantage lives. Without a persistent object cache the free alternatives are simpler and comparable.
