What Gravity Forms does

A developer-friendly form platform with deep hooks, advanced field types and a mature add-on ecosystem.

It sits in the forms part of a WordPress stack and is sold by Rocketgenius on a premium basis. We recommend it in our forms guides because it does that one job well without asking you to rebuild the rest of the site around it.

Every plugin adds work to a page request, so treat this as a decision with a cost. Record a speed test before you install it and run the same test afterwards, on the same page, so you know exactly what it charged you.

Where Gravity Forms ranks elsewhere

Gravity Forms does not appear in the published "best of" lists we track from WPBeginner, TechRadar, Kinsta, Themeisle and similar sites. That is not a mark against it - those roundups are short and skew towards the biggest names.

What changed in the latest version

v1.10.2Latest releaseAugust 13, 2026
  • Improved: Custom rejection messages now have HTML safely removed before being shown to visitors
  • Fixed: Email rejection rules added to a specific field quietly did nothing when the feature was turned off in the plugin settings - the form editor now lets you know and links to the setting
  • Fixed: Regular expression rejection rules not working as intended: Rules could change when saved (a starting or ending period was removed, and anything after a < was cut off), so they never matched
  • Rules were checked against lowercased text, which flipped the meaning of patterns like \D , \S , and \W and could block real submissions
v1.10.1August 6, 2026
  • Fixed: Multi-page forms fetched an anti-spam token on every Next and Previous click, delaying page navigation on slow servers; the token is now only fetched on final submission and Save and Continue
v1.10.0July 23, 2026
  • Added: Shield silentCAPTCHA integration that uses Shield Security's bot detection as an additional spam signal, with a global default and per-form override (thanks, Paul Goodchild!)
  • Added: "Spam Check Order" settings - control the order the token check, Shield silentCAPTCHA, and AI Spam Review run in, and whether to stop checking once a submission is flagged as spam
  • Fixed: A spam verdict from one check could be cleared when the submitter was logged in with entry-editing permissions
  • API: Added gf_zero_spam_check_order filter to modify the order in which spam checks run

Pros and cons

  • Best extensibility for custom builds
  • Paid support and updates from the vendor
  • Actively maintained and used on production sites we test
  • No free version and a steeper learning curve
  • Renewal cost is annual and per site

How to use it

  1. 1Start from a template close to the form you need.
  2. 2Add only the fields you will act on, and mark the rest optional.
  3. 3Set up notification and confirmation emails, then send a real test.
  4. 4Add conditional logic so long forms only show relevant questions.
  5. 5Pair it with an SMTP plugin so notifications actually arrive.
