WordPress sends password resets, order receipts, form notifications and admin alerts through the server by default. On most hosts that path is unauthenticated and unreliable. An SMTP plugin connects those messages to a real mail service, adds logging and makes failures easy to investigate.
How this guide was produced
Documented plugin features reviewed on 10 September 2026. Provider support, free tiers and sending limits change often, so confirm material claims on the official site before you commit.
Seven options at a glance
| Plugin | Best for | First thing to verify |
|---|---|---|
| WP Mail SMTP | Guided setup and broad provider support | Which providers the free version covers |
| FluentSMTP | Multiple sending connections | Log retention settings |
| Post SMTP | Diagnostics and fallback routing | Provider add-ons required |
| Easy WP SMTP | Plain authenticated SMTP credentials | How secrets are stored |
| MailPoet | Newsletters and site email together | Sending-plan limits |
| Brevo | Sites already using Brevo | Account and quota terms |
| Gmail SMTP | Small Gmail-based setups | OAuth setup and daily limits |
How we assessed them
We compared mailer support, authenticated connections, OAuth, delivery logs, alerts, fallback routing, multisite behaviour, documentation quality and the boundary between the free plugin and the paid sending service behind it.
Set-up checklist
- Create a sender address on your own domain, not a free mailbox
- Configure SPF and DKIM with the mail provider, then add DMARC in stages
- Send tests to several mailbox providers, not just your own inbox
- Trigger real password reset, form, receipt and admin messages
- Never paste SMTP passwords into screenshots, tickets or logs
Logs are personal data
Store only what you need to troubleshoot, restrict who can read the log and set a documented retention period.

Common questions
Is an SMTP plugin an email service?
Usually not. The plugin routes your messages to a separate SMTP or API provider, which does the actual sending.
Does SMTP guarantee inbox placement?
No. Authentication, domain reputation, message quality, consent, volume and recipient behaviour all still matter.
Should email logs store message bodies?
Only if you genuinely need them for troubleshooting. Restrict access and delete them on a schedule.
