A focused FAQ can help readers complete a task quickly. It can also give search systems clear, self-contained passages to understand. No layout or schema can guarantee inclusion in an AI Overview, but useful answers, strong evidence and sound technical SEO improve the page as a whole.
What Google says about AI search visibility
Google's AI features guidance says the same foundational SEO practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear in Search, and there is no special AI file or schema requirement. The goal is straightforward: make a page people find useful, keep important content available as text, support claims with evidence, and ensure Google can crawl it.
Step 1: Choose questions with real intent
Start with questions that arise during a real decision or task. Good sources include support conversations, sales calls, on-site search terms, community discussions, Search Console queries, and the objections readers raise after using a product.
- Definition: what does the feature mean?
- Process: how do I complete the task?
- Choice: which option fits a particular situation?
- Compatibility: will two products work together?
- Cost: what is included and what costs extra?
- Risk: what can go wrong and how is it prevented?
Avoid adding a question merely because a keyword tool reports volume. It should help the reader move forward.
Step 2: Put the FAQ on the right page
An FAQ should support the main subject of its page. Questions about an eBook checkout belong on the eBook selling guide; questions about caching belong on an optimisation guide. Create a separate FAQ hub only when people need to browse a large support library.
Examples from this site
- eBook plugin guide - its questions cover delivery, protection and refunds
- Site search guide - its questions cover indexing, ranking and multiple plugins
- The plugin directory - each listing links out to the deeper comparison
Step 3: Write the direct answer first
Use the question as a descriptive heading. Begin the answer with one or two sentences that resolve it, then add qualifications, steps, examples or evidence. The answer should still make sense when quoted on its own.
Step 4: Add evidence and firsthand detail
Generic answers are easy to reproduce and hard to trust. Improve them with tested steps, screenshots you created, measurements, limitations, examples and links to primary documentation. If a fact can change, add a reviewed date and verify it against the official source.
Step 5: Build accessible FAQ markup in WordPress
- Add a Heading block for each question
- Place the answer in Paragraph, List, Image or Table blocks below it
- Keep the full answer available in the page HTML
- Use a table of contents or linked list when the section is long
If you use an accordion
Ensure buttons work with a keyboard, show a visible focus state, expose expanded and collapsed status to assistive technology, and keep the answer in the HTML. Content should not depend on a delayed script before it exists on the page.
Step 6: Decide whether FAQPage schema is appropriate
Google limits FAQ rich results to well-known, authoritative government and health sites, so most commercial WordPress sites should not expect one. Schema can still describe content for other consumers, but it must match what visitors can see. Use FAQPage when the publisher supplies one accepted answer per question, and QAPage only when users submit multiple answers.
Step 7: Check the page before publishing
- Each question is specific and relevant to the main topic
- The opening sentence gives a complete answer
- Claims link to primary or authoritative sources
- Important details appear as text, not only inside an image or video
- Internal links connect to the next useful step
- The author, editorial responsibility and updated date are clear
- The page works on mobile and with a keyboard
- Canonical tags, indexing rules and status codes are correct
- Any structured data validates and matches visible content
Step 8: Strengthen internal links
Use descriptive anchor text from relevant guides to the FAQ page or section, and link outward from the answers when a longer explanation helps. A plugin listing might link to a detailed comparison, a setup tutorial, a performance guide and a troubleshooting FAQ, each with a distinct purpose.
A worked internal-link path
- Plugin review - the decision page for one caching plugin
- Hosting comparison - the layer underneath the plugin choice
- Measurement tool - the step that proves whether the change worked
- How we test - the accountability page every claim should reach
Step 9: Keep answers current
Review high-traffic and product-dependent FAQs on a schedule. Update screenshots and interface names when software changes, remove obsolete answers, merge duplicates, and record an updated date only when the page has actually been reviewed.
A reusable answer template
- Direct answer: resolve the question in the first sentence
- Condition: state when the answer changes
- Method: give the essential steps or criteria
- Evidence: link to a source, test or concrete example
- Next action: point the reader to the relevant setup or decision
Common mistakes
- Writing for a phrase instead of a person, then repeating slight keyword variations
- Hiding the useful answer behind a long introduction
- Publishing unsupported certainty about prices, behaviour or search features
- Adding schema that does not match the visible page
- Installing a heavy plugin for a small section that core blocks could handle
Common questions
Does an FAQ need schema to appear in an AI Overview?
No. FAQ structured data is not required for AI Overviews. Valid markup can help Google understand supported page types, but it does not guarantee a search feature or ranking.
How many questions should an article include?
Include the questions needed to resolve the topic. Three strong answers can be more useful than twenty shallow ones. Split the section when it becomes difficult to navigate.
Do accordion answers count as visible content?
They can, provided the answers are present in the rendered HTML and accessible to users. Test the implementation instead of assuming the widget handles accessibility correctly.
How long does it take to appear in an AI Overview?
There is no fixed timeframe and no guarantee of inclusion. Search features vary by query, location, device and system changes. Focus on an indexable page that answers the question better for the reader.
